Scott Moore starts interim city manager role Monday
Wichita City Council members Tuesday appointed Assistant City Manager Scott Moore as interim city manager, a position he's likely to hold for about four months while the search for a long-term manager progresses.
He'll start Monday.
Any changes to Moore's salary -- currently set at $107,689 -- will be decided later.
The move followed several closed-door meetings of the City Council, and it came just a day after incoming city manager Pat Salerno abruptly decided not to come to Wichita. He was supposed to start work next Monday.
The city plans to hire a national search firm later this month to recruit candidates.
Tanker decision expected today
The Pentagon is expected to announce today whether the Air Force will rebid a $35 billion contract to build new refueling tankers.
Several lawmakers have been told the agency will decide how to move forward after a government report found major flaws in the decision to award the lucrative contract to Northrop Grumman and its European partner over Boeing Co.
Two congressional staffers, speaking on condition of anonymity because the decision is pending, said Air Force officials began informing lawmakers Tuesday afternoon of the pending announcement.
Last month, a Government Accountability Office report said Boeing might have won the contract if the Air Force had not made mistakes in evaluating the competing bids. The GAO recommended the service hold a new competition.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates would not confirm when a decision would be made, but told reporters Tuesday: "I expect to announce the way forward very soon."
